HomeEmergency PlumberWater Main Leak

A leak in your supply pipe, the pipe bringing water from the boundary stopcock to your house, can waste thousands of litres a day. You might not see it because it's underground, but you'll notice wet patches in the garden, a constantly running water meter, or a sudden spike in your bill. In Sheffield's older properties around Crookes, Nether Edge, and the Meadows, lead or old iron supply pipes are common and they corrode over time.

We use leak detection equipment to pinpoint exactly where the pipe is leaking without digging up your entire garden. Once found, we excavate just that section, repair or replace the damaged pipe, and reinstate the ground properly. For badly corroded pipes, we'll recommend replacing the entire run with modern plastic pipe that'll last 50 years.

We work across all Sheffield areas with typical response times of 2 hours for emergencies. No call-out fee. Our visit includes the first hour's labour when you book with us. Our 12-month guarantee is included with our membership plan, which also includes £50 off all our services, discounts on parts, £80 off our appliance store, and priority service. We'll coordinate with Severn Trent if the leak is on their side of the boundary.

Signs of a Water Main Leak

⚠️

Wet patches in the garden

Soggy ground, puddles that don't dry out, or unusually green patches of grass in a line from the boundary to your house. Underground leaks saturate the soil above them.

⚠️

Water meter constantly spinning

Turn off all taps and appliances. If your water meter dial is still moving, water is escaping somewhere between the meter and your taps, usually the supply pipe.

⚠️

Unexplained high water bills

A hidden supply pipe leak can waste 10,000+ litres a month. If your usage has doubled or tripled with no explanation, there's likely a leak underground.

⚠️

Low water pressure

If pressure has gradually dropped across all taps, the supply pipe might be leaking and reducing what reaches your house. Or a section has partially collapsed.

⚠️

Sound of running water outside

Put your ear to the ground near the supply pipe route. If you hear hissing or trickling, especially at night when background noise is low, water is escaping underground.

How We Find and Fix Supply Pipe Leaks

We don't guess where to dig. We use detection equipment to pinpoint the leak first:

1

Confirm the leak location

We test your water meter with all taps off. If it's moving, water is leaking. We isolate internal pipework to confirm the leak is on the supply pipe outside, not inside your house.

2

Trace the pipe route

We use a pipe locator to map where the supply pipe runs from the boundary to your house. Older properties sometimes have unexpected routes that aren't documented.

3

Detect the leak acoustically

Listening equipment picks up the sound of water escaping under pressure. We follow the pipe route and pinpoint exactly where the leak is before we dig.

4

Excavate and assess

We dig a small inspection hole at the leak point to see the damage. If it's a single pinhole, we might repair it. If the pipe is corroded, we'll recommend replacing the whole section.

5

Repair or replace

For localised damage, we cut out the damaged section and fit a new length. For badly corroded pipes, we run a new MDPE plastic pipe from boundary to house. It's more upfront cost but lasts decades.

6

Test and reinstate

We pressure-test the repair, turn the water back on, and confirm the leak is fixed. We backfill the trench, compact the soil, and reinstate paving or turf properly.

Repair vs Full Replacement

Should you patch the leak or replace the entire supply pipe? It depends on the pipe condition:

Patch repair for new pipes

If your supply pipe is modern plastic (blue MDPE) and the leak is from accidental damage, a localised repair is fine. The rest of the pipe is sound.

Replace if it's lead

Lead pipes corrode from inside, leaching lead into your drinking water. If your supply pipe is lead (dull grey, soft metal), replace it entirely with plastic. It's safer and you'll never have supply pipe problems again.

Replace if it's old iron

Galvanised iron pipes rust from the inside. Once they start leaking, more leaks follow. Patching one leak is temporary, the rest of the pipe will fail soon.

Replace if multiple leaks

If this is the second or third leak in a few years, the pipe has reached the end of its life. Replacing it now saves repeated callouts and higher total cost.

Got questions? Here's the quick answers.

How much does water main leak repair cost in Sheffield?
Localised patch repairs cost £180-£350 across Sheffield and surrounding areas. Full supply pipe replacement from boundary to house costs £400-£900 depending on distance and ground conditions. Leak detection alone costs £100-£180, or it's included free if we do the repair.
How long does supply pipe repair take?
Patch repairs take 3-5 hours including excavation and reinstatement. Full pipe replacement takes 1-2 days, we need to dig a trench from the boundary to your house, lay new pipe, backfill, and reinstate paving or turf, whether you're in City Centre, West Bridgford, or Beeston.
Is a water main leak my responsibility or the water company's?
Severn Trent is responsible for the pipe from the main in the street up to the boundary of your property (usually the stop valve at the pavement). From the boundary to your house, it's your responsibility. We handle your section.
Can you find the leak without digging up my garden?
Yes, we use acoustic listening equipment and pipe locators to pinpoint the leak before excavating. We only dig where the leak actually is, not trial holes everywhere. This saves your garden and reduces cost.
Should I repair or replace my supply pipe?
If the pipe is modern plastic and the leak is from accidental damage, repair it. If it's lead, old iron, or corroded copper, replace the whole run. One leak means more will follow. Full replacement costs more now but saves repeated callouts.
Will you reinstate my driveway properly after digging?
Yes, we'll reinstate paving, block paving, tarmac, or turf to match the surrounding area. For complex surfaces like pattern paving, we'll cut and lift whole blocks rather than smashing through, so it looks right when finished.
How do I know if my supply pipe is leaking?
Turn off all taps and appliances. Check your water meter. If the dial is moving, water is escaping. Wet patches in the garden, soggy ground that doesn't dry, or suddenly high bills are also signs.
What if the leak is under my driveway?
We can excavate under driveways if necessary, or we can drill horizontally and run a new pipe beneath without lifting the surface. This costs more but avoids breaking up expensive paving.
Can a supply pipe leak cause low water pressure?
Yes, if enough water is escaping before it reaches your house, pressure drops. A large leak can reduce pressure significantly. Once repaired, normal pressure returns.
